Cape Coast Mayor threatens legal action over children seen roaming at night

The Mayor of Cape Coast Metropolitan, Mr. George Justice Arthur, has implemented measures to protect and safeguard children within his jurisdiction from harm, as they are the future leaders of this nation.

He expressed concern that some children roam the streets at odd hours into the night without the escort of an adult, a practice that tends to jeopardise their future.

Mr. Justice Arthur again worried about some children within the Metropolis who also engage in drug or substance abuse, “a trend which is unacceptable, given the consequences it has on them”.

“I want to assure you that in the coming days, intensive sensitisation would be done to caution parents against it. Any child below the age of 18 years old found outside after 9pm after the sensitization exercise would be arrested and taken to the police station. Parents of such children will face the full rigors of the law” he disclosed.

Mr. Justice Arthur again assured that all ghettos within the metropolis will be demolished as well.

The Mayor of Cape Coast dropped this hint at the 1st ordinary Cape Coast Assembly meeting of the 2nd session of the 9th assembly where he gave hope to the people of Cape Coast.

According to him, the security services, especially the Ghana Police Service had been keeping vigilance and patrolling places to ensure the safety of lives and properties at the area.

Touching on revenue performance in the Metropolis, Mr. Justice Arthur expressed sadness that “the Assembly’s major challenge has always been its inability to collect enough revenue from traditional sources to support what the Central Government gives us”.

Mr. Justice Arthur revealed that for the 2025 financial year, an amount of GH55,734,616.75 was projected as revenue from internal sources and out of this figure GH7,893,420.65 to be collected from internal source.

He added that by the end of June this year, an amount of GH2,617,214.61 was collected, presenting 33% performance.

Touching on road infrastructure, he assured that the Assembly through its Department of Urban Roads was to carry out the construction of new roads within the historic city of Cape Coast.

Mr. Justice Arthur announced that the Government of Ghana as part of its Social Protection Policy had been supporting PWDs from their share of the Common Fund hence the Assembly in collaboration with the Disability Fund Management Committee was able to disburse the common fund to 70 PWDs including those with mental health.

In line with President John Dramani Mahama’s 24hour economy policy, Mr. Justice Arthur announced that Cape Coast castle and forts will start operating 24hours.
