Cape Coast MCE introduces safety measures for Pragyia Riders

The Office of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), in consultation with both Cape Coast North and South constituency Members of Parliament (MPs), has regulated the activities of Pragyia riders in the area to enhance safe transportation.

The Mayor of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Mr. George Justice Arthur, disclosed that the intervention aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to regulate ‘Okada and tricycles’ as commercial vehicles in the country.

He made this statement when the Assembly, in collaboration with the Cape Coast North and South MPs, Mr. George Kwaku Ricketts-Hagan and Dr. Kwamina Minta-Nyarku respectively, organized a training summit for hundreds of Pragyia riders in the Metropolis to promote safety and improve standards in the service.

Mr. Justice Arthur noted that the Pragyia transport business has created jobs for many young people in Cape Coast, helping to improve their livelihoods.

He assured that the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, under his leadership, remains committed to supporting Pragyia transportation initiatives to improve mobility and create employment opportunities for the youth.

According to him, “As your MCE in Cape Coast, I will never ban the Pragyia transportation service in the Metropolis.”

Mr. Justice Arthur cautioned that by the end of October this year, every Pragyia rider must be registered with both the Assembly and the DVLA.

“Every Pragyia rider must wear a helmet and a reflector with proper footwear. Any rider who operates without a helmet and reflector will not be allowed to ride in Cape Coast,” he warned.

“It will therefore be illegal to operate a Pragyia business without registering your vehicle and belonging to an association in the Metropolis,” Mr. Arthur added.

“After we regulate you, no security personnel will collect any bribes. The police will not unnecessarily take money from Pragyia riders,” he emphasized.

Mr. Justice Arthur also commended the Chairman of the Pragyia Regulatory Committee, Mr. Bernard Koomson, for his dedication and support in transforming Pragyia operations in the area.

Officers from the Road Authority, DVLA, MTTD, Police, and NIC equipped the participating riders with knowledge on road safety regulations, traffic laws, customer service, and discipline.
