Cashier jailed for stealing GH¢8,575 to fund lost sports bets

A 23-year-old cashier, Andy Tetteh, has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour by the Kaneshie District Court One after pleading guilty to stealing GH¢8,575.00 from his employer and using the money to place sports bets, which he ultimately lost.
Tetteh was employed as a cashier at Bingo Bets, a betting company located at Ecomog, Adabraka.
According to Police Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, the incident took place on April 30, 2025, when Tetteh received cash payments totalling GH¢8,575.00 from customers placing bets.
Instead of accounting for the funds, he diverted the entire amount into his personal betting activities in an attempt to increase the money.
However, the bets did not pay off, and he lost all of it.
The company’s manager, Mr. Teye Simon Kwabla, filed a complaint with the police after Tetteh failed to produce the money.
Following investigations, Tetteh was arrested and charged with stealing. He admitted to the offence during his court appearance and was convicted on his own plea.
The presiding judge sentenced him to three months in prison, to be served with hard labour.
The case has raised renewed concerns about the rising trend of gambling-related theft and the financial risks associated with unregulated or excessive betting, particularly among young people.
