Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency, the late Ernest Kumi, is said to have died as a result of heart failure.

This was made known to parliament by the second deputy speaker, who made the revelation during his final remarks before parliament went on recess.

“We were profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of our colleague, Honourable Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who passed away on 7th July 2025 at the youthful age of 40.

“His demise, attributed to heart failure, is a painful reminder of the demanding nature of our calling. As a House, we must begin earnest discussion on a comprehensive healthcare support programme tailored to the unique pressures of our parliamentary work,” the Speaker said.

Ernest Kumi died on July 7, 2025, after reports indicated that he was rushed to the hospital after he complained of chest pains.

The Electoral Commission has announced that the by-election in Akwatia will be held on September 2, 2025, to elect a replacement for him.
