Democracy Hub, CPP sue to remove Kotoka’s name from international airport in Accra

Democracy Hub and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) have sued at the Supreme Court to drop the name “Kotoka” from the country’s premiere International airport.

They say because Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka played a major role in the 1966 coup d’état that overthrew President Kwame Nkrumah’s government; maintaining his name contradicts Ghana’s democratic values.

Democracy Hub asserted that maintaining Kotoka’s name on a national monument signifies state endorsement of unconstitutional actions.

Democracy Hub said renaming the airport would proclaim Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance.

Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was a Ghanaian soldier instrumental in the 24 February 1966 coup d’état that overthrew President Kwame Nkrumah’s government.
