CHASS threatens NSMQ boycott over delayed funding

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has announced that schools across the country will not be able to participate in the 2025 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) unless government releases funds to support their participation.

In a letter dated October 3, 2025, and addressed to Primetime, organisers of the NSMQ, CHASS cited the lack of funds to mobilise and organise students for the competition as the main reason behind the decision.

“Schools will not be able to participate in the balloting and subsequently, the Quiz competition due to non-availability of funds to schools to mobilise and organise their students to take part,” the letter signed by CHASS National Secretary, Baro Primus, stated.

The Association assured organisers that its position could change once the necessary resources are provided by government.

“We want to assure the organisers that, as soon as government releases funds for that purpose, CHASS will review its position and communicate to you accordingly,” it added.

CHASS also expressed regret for the inconvenience the decision may cause and thanked the organisers for their understanding.
