Cheers at National Delegates Conference has no bearing on flagbearership race

General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, is of the firm view that the cheers at the National Delegates Conference will not have any toll on the 31st January 2026 flagbearership election.

According to him, only 6000 delegates were present for the conference held at the University of Ghana’s sports stadium, whereas over 200,000 people are expected to vote on January 31, 2026.

Justin Kodua is of the view that those who make this argument are just being petty.

“I don’t think the cheers at the delegates conference will have any toll on the 2026 flagbearership race. We were only about 6000 delegates, while we are expecting over 200,000 delegates to cast their ballot. So, how will 6000 people cheering someone influence the over 200,000 people who will vote?

He continued, “People who make the argument and raise hell just because of this are just petty. There were people who wanted to contest for national positions in the stands who were campaigning even though we had not opened nominations. Should we have stopped them?”

On manipulating the process to favour one candidate, Justin Kodua indicated that if the party wanted to manipulate the system, they wouldn’t have pushed for the electoral college to be expanded.

“If we wanted to manipulate the system, we would not have asked that the Electoral College be expanded to allow old executives, appointees, and others to vote. Someone who was an appointee during Kufour’s era, can we influence his/her decision? It will be difficult for anyone to say the album is for one candidate,” he questioned while speaking on Accra-based Net 2 Television.
