China has given Ghana a $30m gift – Ablakwa confirms Aflao market deal

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a major development initiative for the people of Aflao in the Volta Region—a US$30 million ultramodern market and ancillary facilities, fully funded by a grant from the government of China.
In a social media update following a working visit to Aflao, the Minister revealed that he was joined by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, to inspect 159 acres of land allocated for the project by the Aflao Traditional Authority.
“I was in the beautiful Volta Region city of Aflao yesterday with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa to inspect land earmarked for the ultramodern market with ancillary facilities which would be constructed with the recently secured US$30 million grant from China,” Ablakwa wrote.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to Togbui Adjongaga Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, as well as Member of Parliament and Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, for their roles in facilitating the project.
“Delighted to confirm that the Aflao Traditional Area has allocated 159 acres of land for this priority project,” he said, noting that the development will transform Aflao into a key regional trading hub.
According to Ablakwa, the market—promised by President John Dramani Mahama—will not only boost ECOWAS trade but also advance goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth in the Volta Region.
“President Mahama is a leader who keeps his promise,” Ablakwa added, describing the project as a “non-refundable gift” from China and “a significant milestone in our outstanding Ghana-China relations.”
