CitiNewsRoom Deletes UTAG President Story

A blistering Galamsey interview by the President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), KNUST Chapter, which was published by Citi News and widely circulated online over the weekend, has mysteriously disappeared from the outlet’s platforms.

Although no reasons were given by Citi news, this has generated speculation of political interference and censorship.

The now-deleted story featured Prof. Eric Abavare, who harshly criticized President John Dramani Mahama over what he described as a betrayal of anti-galamsey promises made during the 2024 election campaign.

The interview was originally aired and published by Citi News but vanished from both its website and social media platforms within 24 hours without any explanation from the station.

In the interview, Prof. Abavare accused President Mahama of lacking genuine commitment to fighting illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, saying the president had shown “no consistency” with his campaign rhetoric.

“Mr. President, I do not want to use the word that you are a conman, but from the actions so far, it is evident that you are a conman,” the UTAG president was quoted as saying.

The deletion has sparked a fresh wave of concern about media freedom and government overreach.

Several journalists and civil society observers have suggested that Citi News may have come under political pressure to remove the story because of its direct criticism of the sitting president.

The deleted story had touched on Mahama’s failure to act on a pre-election pact signed by the major presidential candidates in 2024. The pact included firm promises to repeal Legislative Instrument 2462 and to declare a state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining within the first year in office.

According to Prof. Abavare, those commitments have been abandoned since Mahama’s return to the presidency.
