One does not need to be president to serve her country – Hannah Tetteh

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hannah Serwaa Tetteh says she has no ambition of running for President of Ghana.

Hannah Tettey, who has recently been appointed as the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), mentioned in an interview on 3FM’s morning show with Johnnie Hughes that “one does not need to be President to serve her country.”

She was one of the highly anticipated choices of running mate to President John Mahama during the just-ended general elections. But Hannah Tetteh says it has never been part of her political ambition of serving in the highest office of the land.

“I have no ambition or intentions of being the NDC flagbearer or running mate. It has never crossed my mind or part of my ambitions to lead the NDC as its presidential candidate,” she stressed.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General believes the National Democratic Congress has a lot of competent men and women who are capable of leading the party in the 2028 Presidential elections.

“When I look in the NDC, I see a lot of potential young men and women who are young, vibrant and full of capabilities to lead the party after President John Mahama. So, I feel it is prudent to allow the young ones to also grow,” she said.

Hanna Serwaa Tetteh is a Ghanaian barrister, diplomat and politician who has been serving as the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya and as Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) since 2025.

Earlier in her career, Ms Tetteh served in the cabinet of Ghana as Minister for Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2013 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017. She was also the Member of Parliament for the Awutu-Senya West constituency.
