Court frees OKESS student and stepfather on bail after firearm arrest

A District Court in Mamponteng has granted bail to a 16-year-old student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS), who is at the center of a police investigation for the unlawful possession of a firearm.

Presided over by Natacha Abena Tuffour, the court set the student’s bail at GH¢50,000 with two sureties. At least one surety must be a government worker or a senior staff member earning a monthly salary of not less than GH¢4,000.

His stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi, who is also facing charges in connection with the incident, was granted bail in the sum of GH¢30,000, also with two sureties. One of his sureties must earn a minimum of GH¢3,000 per month. The court did not take pleas from either of the accused persons.

According to police prosecutors, the incident occurred on May 14, 2025, when an assistant headmaster at OKESS discovered a locally manufactured pistol in the possession of the student on campus. The school authorities promptly handed the student over to the police, who later arrested his stepfather, a pastor, as part of the investigation.

Both individuals were initially released on police enquiry bail before being formally charged under Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which prohibits the unlawful possession of firearms.

In court, the police disclosed that the stepfather denied owning the weapon. In his caution statement, he claimed the pistol belonged to his late uncle, who died about a year ago. He explained that the firearm had been left in the uncle’s room and suggested that the boy may have retrieved it from there.

The case is expected to return to court as investigations continue.
