Cyber breach hits education sector: 505 staff credentials leaked

New reports suggest that the education sector has suffered a major cyber breach after 505 employee credentials from public institutions were discovered on the dark web.
The National Cyber Security Emergency Response Team, through surveillance since January, found over 5,000 stealer logs, with more than 1,000 already being sold online.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Professor Diyawu Mumin at the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month event in Accra, stated that the incident highlighted the vulnerability of schools to hackers.
He explained that the education sector handled vast amounts of sensitive data, making it a key target for cybercriminals.
He warned that threats such as data theft, sextortion, and online scams were eroding public trust.
The Ministry of Education is reviewing its ICT in Education Policy to include stronger cybersecurity safeguards and plans to set up an Education Sector Computer Emergency Response Team (EduCERT).
Officials from GTEC and the Cyber Security Authority stressed that investing in digital safety and training is now essential to protect institutions and build local cybersecurity expertise.
