Damang Mining Lease: Our concern should be who the lease will be given to after Goldfields

Dr Steve Manteaw says rather than worry our heads over the decision not to renew the Damang mining lease for Goldfields, the country should be worried about who the lease will be given to.

He holds the view that the decision concerning Damang must be taken with transparency and in the collective interest of the Ghanaian people.

In a Facebook post expressing his opinion on the ongoing issue, he said Goldfields has proved that they have no use for the Damang mines.

Therefore, it comes as a shock to him that we want to renew the mining lease.

“I see no issue with the refusal to renew the Goldfields Damang lease, since the company itself started deinvesting in the project two years ago, and proceeded to direct all subs and suppliers to demobilise. The sudden interest in the mine, expressed by Goldfields is strange and serves as a caution to the regulator to avoid a repetition of past mistakes.

For us as citizens, our interest at this moment lies in what happens to Damang, and that decision ought to be taken transparently and in our collective national interest.

Shalom,” he said.
