Democracy must deliver, not just exist — Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has emphasised the need to enhance Ghana’s democracy’s effectiveness and accountability, following his participation in a public lecture organised by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) on Tuesday, September 4, 2025.
The lecture, delivered by governance expert Dr. Hene Aku Kwapong, was themed “Beyond the Text: Making Ghana’s Constitution Deliver Democracy” and explored pathways to strengthen Ghana’s constitutional framework and improve service delivery.
Sharing his thoughts after the event, Afenyo-Markin praised the discourse, highlighting its importance for the country’s future as a democracy.
“This morning, I joined the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) for a stimulating public lecture by Dr. Hene Aku Kwapong on the theme: ‘Beyond the Text: Making Ghana’s Constitution Deliver Democracy.’
The lecture offered deep reflections on how Ghana can strengthen accountability, improve service delivery, and ensure our constitutional democracy truly works for all citizens,” he said.
According to him, the discussions provided fresh insights into how Ghana’s constitutional framework can be reformed to better serve the needs of the people and sustain democratic stability.
In an unrelated development, Afenyo-Markin has addressed what he describes as alleged death threats from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, urging New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in Akwatia to remain calm and courageous.
Speaking to journalists, he accused Azorka of making violent threats but stressed that he would not be intimidated.
“I have heard that the NDC’s Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, said that he wants to ‘kill’ me. We know them — the infamous Azorka Boys; all they know is beating people up and killing others. So, this is not his first time threatening people. But I am not a coward,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The confrontation reportedly followed Afenyo-Markin’s unannounced visit to the NDC’s party office in Akwatia, a move party executives viewed as provocative ahead of the constituency’s high-stakes by-election.
