Discover new music or step aside

Panji Anoff says Ghana’s media ecosystem is failing to push originality because many DJs and presenters lack the boldness to champion new sounds.

He emphasized that tastemakers shape culture, yet too many stakeholders avoid risk and instead only follow trends.

“We have many people in tastemaker positions who put no effort into finding new music,” he lamented in an interview with Kafui Dey as monitored by MyNewsGh.

“If you don’t have the confidence in what you like, then you shouldn’t be choosing what songs to play on a radio station.”

Panji praised legendary broadcasters like B.B. Menson, whom he credited for transforming Shatta Wale’s early breakthrough.

“One man was playing that song every single day until other DJs started liking it,” he recalled. “B.B. Menson is a tastemaker.”

He insists that originality thrives only when the media is brave enough to believe in emerging artists.

“You need to decide what you like and have so much confidence in it that you believe other people will like it too,” he said.
