Dispatch rider granted GHC16,000 bail in alleged container rental scam

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail in the sum of GHC16,000 with one surety to a 38-year-old dispatch rider, Daniel Ayetey, who has been accused of defrauding a mechanic under the pretext of securing a container for a shop.

Ayetey, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence, is expected to reappear before the court on May 14, 2025. The presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, also directed the prosecution to comply with disclosure obligations before the next hearing.

Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey told the court that the complainant, Bright Oduro—a mechanic based in La—was in search of a container shop for his wife in February 2025.

He was introduced to the accused through an agent, Leonard Dunyo. Ayetey allegedly claimed he had a container available for rent, and the parties agreed on a two-year advance payment of GHC16,000.

The complainant subsequently paid GHC11,000 to Ayetey and spent an additional GHC8,000 on renovation materials.

However, the accused’s aunt, who was revealed to be the actual owner of the container, later halted the renovation works and presented documentation proving her ownership.

Following this development, the complainant lodged a report with the police, leading to Ayetey’s arrest and subsequent arraignment.
