Do not sleep for Mahama to redirect state institutions—minority warns

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has come out swinging against President John Dramani Mahama, fiercely condemning his suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo Sackey.
Addressing the press on behalf of the group, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, described the President’s action as unconstitutional and a dangerous attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary.
“The Minority, committed to justice, constitutionalism, and the sanctity of the judiciary, demands the immediate reversal of this unconstitutional act by President John Dramani Mahama.
“We see it as a politically motivated witch hunt to control the judiciary. This is not judicial reform. It is a tyranny in plain sight,” he declared.
Shaib warned that any moves to stack the judiciary with politically loyal judges would not go unchallenged.
“Any attempt to pack the judiciary with politically compliant judges will be challenged to the fullest extent of the law. The legal fraternity, civil society, and all defenders of democracy, and women… please take note.
“Do not sleep for John Mahama to redirect state institutions under his cloak. Women it is your time to rise up. Please allow the independence of the judiciary to foster. Let us stop attacking the judiciary,” he said emphatically.
He added: “Enough is enough. Leave the judiciary alone. Leave Chief Justice Esaaba Torkonoo Sackey alone.”
The Minority’s reaction adds to the growing concerns across political and civil society circles about the health of Ghana’s democratic institutions under Mahama’s current administration. As tensions continue to rise, all eyes remain on the Presidency for a possible response.
