Doctors at TTH halt services, cite hostility from minister and MP

Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have indefinitely suspended emergency and outpatient services, citing “unwarranted attacks” by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini during a recent visit to the facility.
The decision was taken at an emergency general assembly meeting of the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) on Wednesday, April 23.
The suspension affects general OPD, antenatal, specialist, and paediatric services but excludes inpatient care, which will continue until current patients are discharged.
The doctors are demanding unconditional public apologies from the Minister and the MP, specifically addressed to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa and the Accident and Emergency Unit medical personnel.
In addition, the association has submitted a list of critical logistical and infrastructure needs to hospital management. These include:
- Basic clinical supplies (gloves, gauze, cotton, face masks, syringes, disinfectants)
- Reliable access to water and electricity
- Continuous oxygen supply
- Ventilators, transport incubators, and lab reagents
- Repair of essential equipment such as autoclave machines
- Long-term tools including MRI and CT scan machines, mobile X-ray systems, and ABG analyzers
The association also criticized certain media outlets for biased coverage and stated it would disengage from those platforms unless public corrections are issued.
