Don’t allow politicians to use you to be unprofessional — Okoe Boye warns police

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken to the streets of Accra to protest what it calls “state-sponsored harassment on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

The demonstration was marked by fiery speeches, with former Deputy Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye issuing a pointed message to the Ghana Police Service.

“Our brothers and sisters in uniform must remember that they will not always be under the control of politicians. Use your training and be fair to all Ghanaians,” Okoe Boye told demonstrators.

He argued that the police had become instruments of political intimidation, citing arrests of opposition figures such as Chairman Wontumi and Abronye DC. “Anytime the government feels the youth are losing hope in them, they arrest one politician just to excite their supporters,” he claimed.

Okoe Boye contrasted the current administration with the NPP’s time in office, saying the Akufo-Addo government had focused on initiatives like Free SHS and One District One Factory rather than persecuting opponents.

The speech also underscored the fragility of Ghana’s democracy if law enforcement agencies are perceived as partisan. “Please, effectively, if the police don’t do their job, this government cannot do its job,” Okoe Boye cautioned.

The NPP says it will continue to resist what it describes as deliberate intimidation, insisting that democracy thrives only when political competition is fair and state institutions remain neutral.
