Boakye Agyarko reveals he warned president Kufuor NPP could struggle to win 100 seats

Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has disclosed that months before the 2024 general elections, he cautioned former President John Agyekum Kufuor that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) risked a steep decline in parliamentary seats.

Speaking in an interview on Good Evening Ghana with Paul Adom-Otchere, Agyarko recounted that about three months to the elections, he was invited by Kufuor to share his observations on the political climate.

“The feeling I got was not very good,” Agyarko admitted.

“We had a lengthy conversation. And my message to him was that it’s not good. I said that I would be surprised if we got 100 seats.”

According to him, his frank assessment stunned the former President.

“He almost fell out of his chair. He said, ‘Oh, you thought we couldn’t get 100?’” Agyarko recalled.

At the time, the NPP held 137 seats in Parliament, a sharp drop from its previous 169. Agyarko explained that his prediction was based on a detailed analysis of electoral data and ground realities across the country.

“On my own data analysis… I went through the whole country with him, on paper, showing him the seats that are difficult,” he said.
