Dr. Abiba Zakariah appointed acting Commissioner of National Insurance Commission

President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Abiba Zakariah as the acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), ushering in a new era for insurance regulatory body.

Dr. Zakariah officially assumed office on Monday, February 17, 2025, succeeding Michael Andoh, who had been serving in an acting capacity since April 2023.

With over two decades of experience in the insurance industry, Dr. Zakariah brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role. She previously served as the Group Chief Operating Officer of WAICA Reinsurance Corporation until 2024 and is the founder and Managing Director of Strategist Consortium, a management consulting firm.

A Chartered Insurer and Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and the Institute of Risk Management Professionals of Ghana, Dr. Zakariah holds a BSc and an MBA from the University of Ghana, Legon, and earned her PhD in Management Studies from the Swiss Management Centre. She started her career at SIC Insurance Company, formerly the State Insurance Corporation.

Dr. Zakariah is expected to spearhead policy reforms, encourage broader insurance coverage, and lead discussions on revising minimum capital requirements for insurance firms to enhance industry resilience.
