Driver plows into crowd outside LA nightclub

At least 30 people were injured early Saturday, July 19, when a driver rammed his car into a crowd outside The Vermont nightclub in East Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The suspect, 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, had reportedly been kicked out of the venue moments before he returned in a Nissan Versa and drove into people gathered near a taco truck and valet stand. Authorities say the act appears to have been intentional.

Seven victims are in critical condition, with six others seriously injured. Most of those hit were women, including club patrons and food vendors.

After the crash, bystanders pulled Ramirez from the car, assaulted him, and he was later shot by an unidentified person who fled the scene. Ramirez survived and is now hospitalized under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon.

Mayor Karen Bass called the incident a “heartbreaking tragedy,” as LAPD investigates both the motive behind the crash and the identity of the shooter.
