Driver remanded for escaping police custody at Madina CID

A 28-year-old driver, Razak Sulley, has been remanded into lawful custody by the Adentan Circuit Court after allegedly attempting to escape from the custody of the Madina Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Sulley, who is facing a charge of escaping from lawful custody, pleaded not guilty.
Narrating his side of the incident, Sulley told the court that he had not been fed while in police cells and approached the investigator to ask whether his GHC35—allegedly taken at the police counter—could be used to buy food. He claimed he was slapped for doing so and expressed regret over his subsequent actions.
Presiding judge, Mrs. Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa, remanded him and ordered the prosecution to file their disclosures. The case has been adjourned to May 21, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC).
Presenting the facts, Inspector Theresa Djwerter said the complainant is a female police officer stationed at the Madina Divisional CID.
Sulley, she said, is a resident of Ashongman in Accra and is also facing a separate charge of fraudulent breach of trust.
According to the prosecution, Sulley appeared before the Adentan Circuit Court on March 25, 2025, and pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail in the sum of GHC80,000 with two sureties, but remained in custody as his sureties were yet to finalise the bail conditions.
On March 28, 2025, Sulley requested permission to call his sureties again. While seated at the CID office, he allegedly ignored instructions from the investigator to remain seated and made a dash for the exit. He ran downstairs, passed through the Charge Office, and reached the station’s main entrance before he was caught.
Inspector Djwerter told the court that Sulley later admitted to the offence in his caution statement.
