‘EC not fit for purpose’ – Asiedu Nketia fires Jean Mensa, demands immediate removal

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has renewed calls for the removal of the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission, branding it as “not fit for purpose” and accusing it of repeated failures that threaten Ghana’s electoral stability.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Maakye on Onua TV on Wednesday, June 11, Mr. Asiedu Nketia did not mince words.

“The fact is that the Commission in its current state is not fit for purpose,” he declared emphatically. “Everybody knows.”

He pointed to the Commission’s handling of election results as a clear indication of dysfunction.

“From the Volta Region, then directly to Greater Accra Region. You can’t even declare results,” he lamented, referencing perceived inconsistencies in results collation during past elections.

According to him, the root of the problem lies in a lack of institutional integrity.

“No results can end in a stalemate without being able to declare them—unless someone wants to use their power and do something at variance with the law,” he warned.

Mr. Nketia hinted that discussions are already underway for a formal petition to be filed against the Commission.

“If you have well-meaning people who want to really play by the rules, you can,” he said, suggesting that the EC’s current leadership is acting outside the law and should be replaced.

He vowed to persist with his demand until the necessary constitutional process is triggered to remove the current EC leadership, which he believes is long overdue.

The NDC has repeatedly accused the Jean Mensa-led EC of bias and electoral mismanagement—allegations the Commission has consistently denied.
