ECG Ashanti South Region clamps down on power theft through Loss Reduction Project

The Ashanti South Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched second phase of Loss Reduction Project aimed at curbing power theft and addressing the persistent issue of meter shortages.

The initiative involves the installation of advanced smart prepaid meters equipped with sophisticated features to detect and prevent illegal tampering.

As part of the project, old postpaid meters are being replaced with new smart meters, which are designed to tackle illegal power consumption and reduce revenue losses.

The initiative aims to ensure that meters are more accessible to consumers, alleviating the long-standing challenges many customers face due to frequent shortages.

The launching also coincided with the inauguration of District Steering Committee by Project Manager, Mrs Tamara Asomani Wiafe.

She emphasized that the project includes private sector participation, with suppliers actively involved in the installation of the new meters.

She touched on the smart meters use a digital approach, allowing consumers to purchase power online, making the process more convenient and efficient.

This initiative is expected to enhance the transparency and efficiency of power consumption in the region, helping to stabilize revenue flow for ECG while providing consumers with a more reliable and accessible system.

The Ashanti South Region General Manager of the ECG, Ing Daniel Mensah Asare, said the essence of the project is to continue the aggressive prepaid meter replacement by and advanced MMS prepaid meter complaint to help the company maximize its revenue and reduce system loss.

“The new meter has an advanced tamper-proof feature that prevents tempering,” he said.

About 205,000 meters will be replaced within the Asokwa District.
