Effutu Records High Turnout For National Sanitation Day Celebration

The Effutu Municipality witnessed a massive turnout on Saturday, July 26, 2025 as residents, government officials, and security personnel came together to mark this month’s National Sanitation Day with a coordinated clean-up exercise in Domeabra and Akosua Village Electoral Areas.

As early as 6:00 a.m., residents in the participating areas had closed their shops and joined hands with officers from the Effutu Municipal Assembly, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Prison Service, among others, in a collective effort to rid their environment of filth.

Leading the charge was the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Effutu, Hon. Rev. John Atta Mensah, who spearheaded activities in the Winneba township. The MCE was accompanied by representatives from the Ghana Health Service, the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), traditional authorities, Assembly Members, members of the two Asafo groups, and various waste management providers.

The exercise formed part of the renewed Municipal Sanitation Day initiative under President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which places a strong emphasis on environmental cleanliness, public health, and community hygiene.

Key activities included the desilting of gutters, sweeping of streets and public spaces, weeding of overgrown paths, and the general removal of waste. The exercise was praised for its organization, turnout, and impact, especially in heavily populated zones within the township.

Addressing participants after the event, Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah commended the community’s enthusiasm and reiterated the need for continuous public education on sanitation.

“It is not enough to clean today and wait until the next sanitation day,” he said. “We must continuously educate our people, especially at the community level, about maintaining hygiene and protecting our environment.”

He called on security services to not only participate in future clean-up exercises but also take active roles in public sensitization campaigns.

The MCE further advocated for stronger collaboration between the Municipal Assembly and local stakeholders including the security agencies, traditional leaders, civil servants, and residents to organize regular inter-electoral area clean-up drives.

“This initiative will not thrive on government commitment alone,” he emphasized. “It will require the full participation of every resident, every household, and every organization in Effutu.”

Hon. Atta Mensah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing sanitation by-laws and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility through strategic partnerships and grassroots engagement.

The event ended with renewed pledges from all stakeholders to institutionalize a culture of cleanliness in Effutu, ensuring that the spirit of the sanitation day extends beyond a single event into daily practice.
