El-Wak tragedy exposes systemic weaknesses

The Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has described the El-Wak recruitment disaster as a reflection of Ghana’s broader failure to learn from past mistakes.
The Bolga Central MP called the incident “a national tragedy” and urged the state to confront its systemic shortcomings.
According to him, Ghana continues to repeat avoidable errors because institutions fail to review their processes after major national exercises.
“We are not learning because everywhere in the world, when you undertake these kinds of critical exercises, there is always a stage where you sit back and reflect,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile.
Adongo explained that recruitment exercises have long been conducted across the country, yet no structured review mechanism has been institutionalised to identify weaknesses and prevent future disasters.
He stressed that the military, given its reputation for organisation and precision, should be leading in process evaluation.
“If the military, as one of the best institutions for planning and executing projects, does not have an evaluation mechanism to inform lessons from such events, then I will be surprised,” he noted.
He added that Ghana has been relying on luck instead of improving systems over time. The MP emphasised that the country must embed lessons-learning into all public processes to avoid repeating tragedies that could have been prevented.
