El-Wak tragedy: Nothing will come out of this investigation

Former Attorney General and Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu says the public should have no expectation that the government will deliver a credible inquiry into the El-Wak Stadium stampede of 12 November 2025.
He argues that any investigative body formed by the government is compromised from inception.
“Nothing will come out of any investigation into the catastrophe,” he said, insisting that “the appointing authorities will be judges in their own cause.”
Amidu criticised what he describes as insincere public displays of sympathy. “The crocodile tears being shed and emissaries being sent to the bereaved and injured families are all media spins without sincere remorse,” he said.
He questioned whether the government would have responded with the same detachment if the victims had been politically connected. “Can you imagine how these avoidable deaths would have been handled if the deceased and injured were part of the political elite?” he asked.
According to him, the state’s attitude reflects a wider culture of disregarding ordinary citizens. He referenced violent incidents in Bawku, Sampa, Kenyasi, Hwidiem and other areas under recent security operations.
“The electorate is just a disposable necessity for elections,” he said, alleging that innocent people were brutalised under a “legally discredited dragnet” approach to law enforcement.
Amidu maintains that unless accountability mechanisms are independent of executive influence, no meaningful outcome can emerge.
He argues that the government has shown no willingness to accept responsibility for the structural failures that led to the tragedy.
