Emefa Apawu Opens Up on Petroleum Hub Job Under NDC

Renowned broadcaster Emefa Apawu has revealed that her decision to exit the media space was driven by some factors including the inadequate reward in journalism
Speaking on the ‘Talk No Dey Cook Rice’ podcast, the former Joy FM and Joy News anchor was candid about the factors that led to her transition from newsroom into the corporate world.
Despite public assumptions that her new role was a political appointment under the Mahama-led NDC government, she dismissed that narrative entirely.
“It’s not an appointment. I wanted to go, and the opportunity came. I know the timing makes it look like it’s political, but it’s not,” she clarified.
She said behind the career shift was a story of burnout, sacrifice, and financial strain that comes with journalism in Ghana. Apawu, a single mother of two, revealed that years of working six and sometimes seven days a week came at the expense of both her family and her health.
“My son found it strange to see me at home during the day. He would ask, ‘Is everything okay?’ That’s not the kind of motherhood I envisioned,” she shared.
With her daughter turning 18 soon, Emefa says that she had missed out on much of her children’s upbringing. “The larger part of her life, I have not been there. I can’t keep saying I’m a mother when all I do is chase,” she said.
“Journalism is not rewarding. This space, facts is it is not rewarding,” she stressed.
