Emotions will pass, but words remain

Counselor Frank Edem Adofoli has warned about the long-term damage caused when personal pain is publicly aired during marital breakdowns, following Nana Ama McBrown’s recent divorce disclosure.
In a reflective statement, Adofoli contrasted McBrown’s approach with other high-profile separations that played out publicly.
“A year ago, I was heavily criticised for speaking strongly against Medikal’s video during his separation,” he recalled.
He argued that public outbursts during moments of emotional distress often create irreversible consequences.
“While healing comes, the harsh words spoken in anger remain with the public and on the internet,” he said.
According to him, such moments leave lasting damage. “They leave a dent on the other person’s reputation. Many may lose respect or relationships because of those episodes of breakdown,” Adofoli stated.
He suggested that time often brings perspective. “Today, if you interview Medikal, I do not believe he would speak so harshly, because he too has healed,” he noted.
Adofoli emphasized that emotional reactions during separation should be handled carefully. “Emotions will pass, but careless words can leave lasting scars on relationships built over many years,” he warned.
He also cautioned against unhealthy coping mechanisms. “It is my prayer that the Lord will give us strong support systems during difficult times, so that we can grieve and heal without turning to alcohol or social media to vent against the spouse we once loved,” he said.
He ended his reflection with a biblical reminder: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
