22 children affected in suspected ‘Asana’ contamination incident

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has provided an update on the suspected food poisoning incident involving pupils of Prampram D/A Basic A and Methodist Freeman Basic School.

In a post shared on his social media pages on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the MP described the situation as a “disturbing medical scare” and noted that he had followed up with the District Education Directorate and the Medical Director of the Prampram Polyclinic for details.

According to him, 22 children were affected after reportedly consuming a local drink, ‘asana’, suspected to be contaminated.

Of the number, 21 were treated and discharged for further observation, while one child was admitted overnight as a precautionary measure.

Sam George also disclosed that the vendor who sold the suspected drink is assisting with ongoing medical investigations. Laboratory tests are being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.

He extended well wishes to the affected children and commended hospital staff for their prompt response and care.
