Empty victory – Netizens troll Sam George after MultiChoice promotion Clash

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George aka Sam George, is being trolled online after his recent announcement on DStv promotions appeared to clash with MultiChoice Ghana’s official communication.
What was initially framed as a government victory has quickly turned into a subject of mockery on social media, with many users accusing the minister of prematurely celebrating a win he didn’t secure.
Memes and sarcastic posts have flooded X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, with several users suggesting that the minister had “lost the fight” against MultiChoice over the protracted subscription price reduction impasse.
The backlash follows George’s September 29 briefing, where he declared that government negotiations had led to “an unprecedented increased value offer” for Ghanaian subscribers.
“If you’re on the family package, which is currently valued at 190 Ghana cedis, DStv will automatically bump you up to Compact, which ordinarily goes for 380 Ghana cedis,” he told journalists.
However, MultiChoice Ghana’s internal “We’ve Got You” promotion document, scheduled to run from October 1 to December 31, paints a different picture.
It describes the upgrade offer as part of the company’s periodic customer reward programme, not a special concession achieved through government intervention.
The sharp contrast has fuelled public skepticism, with many online commentators arguing that the minister’s announcement misrepresented the promotion.
A few loyal supporters have come to his defense, insisting that his pressure on MultiChoice may have influenced the timing of the offer.
But the overwhelming reaction has been critical, with some accusing him of “turning routine corporate marketing into political theatre.”
