End galamsey before electing a flagbearer

#FixTheCountry convenor Oliver Barker-Vormawor is demanding that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) address galamsey before selecting its presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.

“Okay, here is our demand. NDC must end galamsey before electing a new flagbearer! Deal? We won’t go into another election with galamsey on the ballot again. It ends here,” Barker-Vormawor wrote in a Facebook post.

His statement came in the wake of the ongoing Stop Galamsey protest, which has drawn Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds to the streets.

The demonstration began with a vigil on Sunday, September 21, 2025, opposite the Jubilee House, where citizens converged to express their frustration over the unchecked devastation of water bodies, forests, and farmlands.

For the activists, galamsey is not only an environmental crisis but a national security threat that continues to undermine livelihoods across the country. The protesters vowed to keep up the pressure until decisive action is taken.

Barker-Vormawor’s call adds political weight to the movement, directly challenging the NDC to make the eradication of galamsey a precondition for leadership.

“We won’t go into another election with galamsey on the ballot again,” he insisted, framing the fight as a defining issue for Ghana’s future.
