EOCO was turned into a political weapon under Ayine

Martin Amidu has alleged that the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) was deliberately weaponized for political purposes under President John Mahama’s administration, with Attorney-General Dominic Ayine playing a key role.

The former Special Prosecutor and Attorney General linked Ayine’s donation of six heavy-duty printers to EOCO to the government’s “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) project, a political initiative launched by then President-Elect Mahama in December 2024 to investigate alleged corruption cases.

“Commonsense would alert the rational being that the looters are supposed to be the adversaries of the in-coming government of President John Mahama and Dominic Ayine,” Amidu stated.

He explained that the ORAL Committee, chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, had received over 2,400 corruption-related complaints, which Mahama promptly directed Ayine to investigate through EOCO.

“This explains why EOCO briefed the Attorney-General in February 2025 and why Ayine suddenly had to buy six heavy-duty printers for them, to hunt perceived political adversaries,” Amidu noted.

According to him, changes made at EOCO between January and May 2025 further revealed an attempt to repurpose the institution into a political law enforcement arm.

“Under Ayine’s watch, EOCO was systematically being weaponized to go after the government’s perceived political adversaries under the smoke screen of Operation Recover All Loot,” Amidu alleged.

He concluded with a cautionary remark, quoting the famous line; “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
