Even the party MPs did better than Bawumia

NPP presidential hopeful Bryan Acheampong has argued that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s track record casts doubt on his prospects if presented again by the party.

Acheampong cited the party’s dismal performance in seven regions, where the NPP did not win a single constituency in the presidential contest.

“Seven regions. Not one constituency. In 2024, we could not win a single constituency in Upper East, Upper West, Savana, Bono East, and Western North,” Acheampong said in an interview on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGh.

He emphasized that, historically, the NPP performs well with presidential candidates surpassing parliamentary votes, but 2024 marked a rare exception. “99% of constituencies, the parliamentary candidates did better than the presidential candidate,” Acheampong noted.

Explaining the implications, he said: “The aggregate of everything builds up to what we call breaking the eight. After 16 years as running mate, still trying to break the eight, we had 41%.” He suggested that these results indicate both party and candidate weaknesses that could affect Bawumia’s chances.

Acheampong positioned himself as an alternative, arguing for a candidate capable of mobilizing both parliamentary and presidential support across regions. “This is why my popularity is soaring…go to the base,” he said, pointing to grassroots support as a key differentiator.
