Ewurabena Aubynn wins Ablekuma North rerun

Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the hotly contested Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, securing 50.21% of the valid votes cast to narrowly defeat Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who polled 49.79%.

The tightly fought rerun, held across 19 polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025, was conducted following a protracted electoral dispute stemming from the December 7, 2024, general election.

Aubynn’s victory marks a significant gain for the NDC in a constituency traditionally considered an NPP stronghold.

The final certified results reflect a margin of less than one percent, underscoring the intensity of the race.

Despite the NPP leadership’s decision to boycott the rerun, Akua Afriyie defied party orders to contest, arguing that she had won the original vote and was simply returning to confirm her mandate.

The election, however, was marred by violence, assaults, and arrests, prompting public concern and statements from political leaders, media unions, and civil society groups.
