Ex-MMDCEs declare ‘unshaken’ support for Bawumia ahead of 2026 NPP polls

A powerful coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration between 2017 and 2024 has formally declared their full support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

At a press conference held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, June 23, the group, operating under the name Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, announced their “strong, unshaken endorsement” of the former Vice President.

Their declaration comes more than a year ahead of the NPP’s next internal elections, slated for January 31, 2026.

Delivering their joint statement, the Forum emphasized that their support is rooted in deep experience and a clear strategic goal.

“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs.

“We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” the group stated.

Their message was followed by a speech from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia himself, who addressed the former MMDCEs with a tone of confidence and clarity.

In what appeared to be a deliberate positioning of himself within Ghana’s democratic transition, he invoked the country’s political history to project his own presidential ambitions.

“History is on my side,” Bawumia declared. “Rawlings handed over to Kufuor, Kufuor handed over to Mills and Mahama, Mahama handed over to Akufo-Addo.

“And Akufo-Addo…,” he paused, letting the crowd draw its own conclusion before continuing, “This natural democratic transition is unfolding, and it ends with me as president.”

His remarks were met with cheers and applause, as the former executives reaffirmed their belief in his leadership and electability.
