Excavators moved from Tema Port to military installations – GPHA

The Government of Ghana has moved to clarify reports surrounding the evacuation of excavators from the Tema Port, following a recent JoyNews investigation that uncovered massive imports of the heavy-duty equipment and alleged late-night clearances.
In a statement issued on August 22, 2025, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) confirmed that excavators imported into the country are being transferred to designated military installations in Tema, Shai Hills, and Accra.
“This directive forms part of national efforts to regulate the importation of excavators and to ensure the safe custody of such equipment until they are duly cleared by their respective owners,” the GPHA explained.
According to the Authority, the move is also intended to ease congestion at the Port of Tema and create additional operational capacity.
“All consignees and their licensed agents are hereby informed that the established customs clearance procedures at the Port remain in force,” the statement stressed.
“Upon completion of clearance formalities, consignees will be directed to take delivery of their equipment from the designated military installations.”
The GPHA further emphasized that the costs associated with transporting the excavators to the military sites, as well as custody charges, “shall be borne strictly by the consignees.”
Authorities assured stakeholders that the directive is in the interest of national security and trade facilitation.
“The cooperation of all concerned is solicited,” the GPHA added.
