Father of acting UCC Vice-Chancellor earns Master’s Degree at 81

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, on Saturday conferred a Master’s degree on his own father, Mr. Joseph Aheto, an 81-year-old graduand.
“I am deeply honoured to recognize my father, who happens to be among the graduands,” Prof. Aheto said, expressing joy during the ceremony.
Speaking to Mynewsgh.com reporter Hajia Asana Gordon shortly after the congregation, Prof. Aheto said he was impressed by his father’s resilience, tenacity, and strong interest in education.
“It underscores the fact that age can never be a limit to education. I think it should motivate the younger ones who, these days, want to make it quickly and earn quick money without really taking their time to educate themselves,” he noted.
Mr. Joseph Aheto, who graduated with an MBA in Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development, said he was excited to be graduated by his own son.
He told *Mynewsgh.com* that he began his career as a classroom teacher in 1966 and played a key role in inspiring his children to take their education seriously.
“When I realized my children were overtaking me, I got my motivation back from them and decided to study an MBA programme at the University of Cape Coast,” he said.
Sharing his academic journey, Mr. Aheto revealed that some younger students initially mocked him when he started the programme.
“They asked what I was looking for at my age, but it did not discourage me. Today, I have graduated,” he said.
He encouraged young people to remain focused on their goals, stressing that it is never too late to learn.
“Every student aspiring to be somebody should continue to work hard, because age is just a number,” he added.
Meanwhile, the University of Cape Coast conferred degrees on 4,154 postgraduate students who, after years of hard work, fulfilled all academic requirements.
Out of this number, 1,904 graduands from the School of Graduate Studies, who pursued programmes in Master of Arts, Business Administration, and Science, graduated in grand style.
