FIFA honours Ghanaian football icons Mfum and Nana Pooley at 75th Congress

The 75th FIFA Congress held on May 15, 2025, in Asunción, Paraguay, was briefly enveloped in silence—an emotional gesture that honoured the memory of two towering figures in Ghanaian football, Wilberforce Mfum and Francis Yaw Frimpong, affectionately known as Nana Pooley.

This heartfelt moment reflected the global football community’s recognition of their enduring contributions.

Mfum, a legendary Black Stars striker born on August 28, 1936, played an unforgettable role in Ghana’s football history, particularly during the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations where he helped secure the nation’s first continental title with decisive goals, including one in the final.

Nana Pooley, on the other hand, became synonymous with Asante Kotoko’s heartbeat.

His voice echoed far beyond the stands, uniting fans and fostering the unwavering spirit of the club through his role on the Supporters’ Communication Team.

His passion and dedication transformed him into a symbol of loyalty and community.

His passing on February 2, 2025, during a league match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC at Nana Kronmansah Park in Nsoatre, sent ripples of sorrow across the football landscape.

Yet in that brief minute of silence, the world remembered not just the lives they lived, but the legacy they left behind—one of triumph, devotion, and the unifying power of the game.
