Fire destroys over 150 structures, claims one life

In the late hours of April 18, a fierce blaze tore through a densely populated area near the Madina Redco flats, leaving destruction in its wake and claiming the life of a young woman.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the fire, which broke out at 11:15 p.m., ravaged over 150 wooden structures and swept through both commercial and residential spaces.

Emergency responders from the Madina Fire Station arrived swiftly on the scene at 11:17 p.m., receiving reinforcement from teams at Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and the National Headquarters.

Despite their swift intervention, the flames had already fully engulfed the area.

“At 12:02 a.m. this morning, the fire, which was met at its fully developed stage, was confined and fully contained at 2:22 a.m.

Over 150 structures and their contents were destroyed,” stated Divisional Officer Two (DO II) Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS Headquarters.

Tragically, the inferno claimed the life of a Nigerian woman named Beauty, believed to be in her early twenties, who got trapped within the burning structures.

“Her charred body has been handed over to the Madina Police for preservation and further investigation,” the fire service confirmed.

While the loss is significant, the swift and coordinated efforts of the firefighters averted an even greater disaster.

“The adept firefighters managed to save over 200 nearby structures, including the Redco flats,” Ackah added.
