Former Defence Minister calls for a 10-year freeze on the sale of state lands

Former Defence Minister, Hon Dominic Nitiwul, has called for a decade-long freeze on the sale of all state lands in Ghana, describing current practices as mismanaged and in need of reform.
Speaking on the management of public property, Nitiwul emphasised the need for a complete halt on land sales to protect national assets and allow for a “reset” of government land policy. “If we want to protect government property, we should freeze everything for the next ten years. This is my view. Others may have different opinions, but regardless of the government in power, NDC or NPP , government lands should be protected,” he stated.
The former minister also disputed claims that the majority of land abuses occurred under the NPP administration, insisting that records show otherwise. “Half of East Legon, many areas in Joworlu, Westlands, and Cantonments were once government lands. A review of the records shows that most of these properties were sold under the NDC, not the NPP,” Nitiwul said.
While acknowledging that no administration has been perfect in handling government lands, Nitiwul argued that a comprehensive freeze would provide an opportunity to reassess policies and safeguard national assets for future generations.
