Ga Traditional Council warns against Igbo new Yam Festival in Accra

The Ga Traditional Council has objected to the planned celebration of the Igbo New Yam Festival in Accra, cautioning that the event could threaten peace and security within the Ga State.

In a letter dated September 19, 2025, and addressed to the Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, the Council expressed concern over an invitation circulating on social media for the 2025 Igbo Day and New Yam Festival scheduled for Sunday, September 21, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park.

The event is being organized by Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, Eze Ndigbo Ghana, under the theme “Sustaining the Culture and Traditions of Ndigbo in the Diaspora.”

The Council, however, described the move as unacceptable. “The Ga Traditional Council has received an invitation and seen a flyer circulating on social media by Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, who has dubbed 2025 Igbo Day in Ghana/New Yam Festival on Sunday, 21st September, 2025, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park. If allowed to proceed, it can possibly cause mayhem and disturbance of peace and security within the Ga State,” the letter stated.

The Registrar of the Ga Traditional Council, Evelyn Amewotse, reminded the organizers that they had previously been cautioned against such practices. “Recalled to our earlier press release dated 9th July, 2025, item VI, Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu was cautioned to desist from all traditional and cultural festivities under the guise of importing Igbo culture into the Ga State,” she wrote.

The Council emphasized that Ga customs and authority must be respected.

“It is to be noted that HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has directed me to affirm that the Ga Traditional Council will not allow persons or groups to infiltrate our traditional space under any guise whatsoever,” the letter read.
