GACL reclaims over 16 prime airport lands from McDan

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully reclaimed more than 16 acres of prime airport land from the McDan Group of Companies, following a decisive ruling by an Accra High Court.

The judgement, delivered on May 6, 2025, granted GACL full possession of parcels of land—measuring approximately 10.63 and 5.66 acres—located near Kotoka International Airport, close to the Action Chapel International.

The lands had been occupied since 2012 by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

GACL initiated legal proceedings in February 2025, citing longstanding breaches of lease agreements and unpaid ground rent totaling $26,296.

The company also requested a perpetual injunction to prevent any future interference by the McDan companies.

In its ruling, the court awarded all reliefs sought by GACL, including the repossession of the lands, payment of the outstanding rent, and an additional GH¢50,000 in legal costs.

The court found that the defendants failed to present a valid defense, justifying the summary judgment in GACL’s favour.

This legal win follows a broader effort by GACL to enforce compliance and protect public assets.

In December 2024, McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended over debt obligations, which were later settled, but the land dispute persisted until this ruling.

GACL management hailed the court’s decision as a major milestone in its asset recovery efforts.

“The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property,” a source within GACL said.

The success is credited to the joint efforts of GACL’s Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who led the recovery initiative.

With the reclaimed lands back under its control, GACL is expected to consider aviation-related projects or strategic partnerships to optimise use of the space and enhance revenue generation.
