GES extends reopening date for single-track SHS to April 23, 2025

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced a change in the reopening date for single-track senior high schools (SHSs) nationwide.

Initially, students were scheduled to return to school on March 29, 2025, following their vacation on March 4.

However, due to the upcoming Eid-Ul-Fitr public holidays and other considerations, the date has now been extended to April 23, 2025.

A statement from GES directed regional directors of education to ensure that all heads of single-track SHSs and senior high technical schools communicate this adjustment to students, parents, and guardians.

“By this letter, regional directors of education are requested to communicate this information to all heads of single-track senior high and senior high technical schools to inform parents, guardians, and students to take note of the new date and prepare accordingly,” the statement read.

The Ministry of the Interior had earlier explained that Eid-Ul-Fitr would fall on Sunday, March 30, 2025. In line with this, the President of Ghana, through an Executive Instrument (E.I.), declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as additional public holidays.

“However, in view of the fact that 30th March 2025 falls on a Sunday and in the interest of the public, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), declared Monday, March 31, 2025, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as additional public holidays and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement from the Ministry of the Interior explained.

With these public holidays falling within the initial reopening period, GES had initially moved the reopening date to April 1, 2025.

However, after further deliberations, it was decided that students would resume on April 23, 2025, to allow for better academic planning and to ensure a smooth transition back to school.

Parents, guardians, and students are advised to take note of the new schedule and make the necessary preparations.
