GETFund receives over GHC 2.7 billion to fully fund free SHS — Ato Forson announces

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has received a substantial allocation of GHS2,710,227,947.00 covering the first four months of 2025 — a move government says secures the future of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, shared the update, confirming that GETFund is now the main funding source for Free SHS, as outlined in the 2025 Budget.

“The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has received a total of Two Billion, Seven and Ten Million, Two Hundred and Twenty-Seven Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-Seven Ghana Cedis (GHS2,710,227,947.00) for the months of January, February, March and April, 2025,” Dr. Ato Forson announced.

According to him, this development marks a turning point in addressing the logistical and operational struggles that have recently plagued the flagship programme — especially concerns around student feeding and delays in food supply to schools.

“As earlier announced in the 2025 Budget, funding for the Free Senior High School Programme is now fully covered under the GETFund.

“Consequently, the challenges, including feeding, which previously impeded the smooth implementation of the programme, have been resolved,” he explained.

The Free SHS initiative, introduced in 2017, has faced waves of criticism and challenges — from overcrowding to delays in disbursement of funds and supply chain issues for school feeding.
