Ghana could save $400 million annually with gas processing plant

Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has disclosed that Ghana will need approximately $800 million this year to procure liquid fuel for the country’s thermal plants.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, he emphasized the importance of establishing a gas processing plant to reduce the financial burden on the state.
“This year alone, we require about $800 million to procure liquid fuels. If we had established a gas processing plant, we could save $400 million of that amount annually,” he stated.
According to him, processing domestic gas would not only ease pressure on the cedi but also provide cheaper alternative energy sources for consumers.
“If we are able to do a gas processing plant and process domestic gas, it will strengthen the currency and make fuel really available and give you cheaper alternative sources of fuel which can be passed on to consumers. Also, we are diversifying our energy mix and bringing in renewable energy,” he added.
