Ghana is back to democracy under Mahama

Award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has summed up the first 120 days of President John Dramani Mahama’s new administration with a single sentence: “Ghana has returned to democracy.”
In a post shared on social media on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Manasseh’s remark appears to be both a reflection and critique of the previous administration, suggesting a shift toward improved governance, openness, and adherence to democratic norms under the new leadership.
Although brief, the post echoes sentiments expressed by sections of the public and civil society groups who have welcomed recent developments such as the reactivation of governance reforms, public engagement on national issues, and renewed focus on institutions like the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Auditor-General’s Office.
President Mahama was sworn into office in January 2025 after winning the December 2024 elections.
His new term has so far been marked by the reintroduction of a ministerial code of conduct, renewed anti-corruption rhetoric, and a series of appointments aimed at strengthening institutional accountability.
