Ghana to enage USA on recent tariffs

Ghana’s Trade Ministry has assured exporters to the United States of America of engaging the US on the imposition of tariffs on Ghanaian products.
President Trump’s latest executive order, imposes sweeping tariffs on exports to the US.
Under the new directive, Ghanaian goods will face a 10% levy, a move that has sparked concerns about its impact on bilateral trade and economic ties.
The tariffs, set to take effect on April 5, fall under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 and are aimed at addressing trade imbalances.
Countries with significant trade surpluses with the US will be subjected to customized tariffs, calculated at half the rate those nations impose on American exports.
Considering the effect of the tariffs on Ghanaian businesses, the ministry will engage the United States of America ambassador on April 7, 2025.
A statement issued on April 5, 2025, by Ghana’s Trade Ministry said, “The Ministry as a matter of urgency, is also engaging relevant stakeholders to determine the extent of the effect and assess the full impact of the US tariffs on the country’s economy. Furthermore, various strategies are under consideration to mitigate the immediate impact on Ghana’s trade”.
It further indicated that it is also engaging relevant stakeholders to determine the extent of the effect and assess the full impact of the US tariffs on the country’s economy.
