Ghana Water boss raises alarm over 52% water loss, growing supply gap in Accra

Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed disturbing data about the state of the country’s water distribution system, pointing to massive losses and an urgent supply-demand gap in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking on Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Mr. Mutawakilu disclosed that as of December 2024, 52 percent of water production—over 150 million gallons—is untraceable due to physical leakages or illegal tracing.

“We have a production shortfall because the demand for Accra is 220 million gallons, but we produce 140. Meaning we are not able to meet the demand of Ghanaians in Accra,” he added.

The figures highlight both a technical and systemic crisis, with water losses accounting for more than half of what is produced—a situation GWL considers unsustainable.

On the same platform, he disclosed that the utility company is grappling with severe financial and operational challenges, including a staggering debt of over GHC1 billion inherited from the previous administration.

Mutawakilu laid bare the difficulties facing the state utility provider, explaining, “We inherited over GHC1 billion in debt from the previous government. We will take about three years to settle our debts without expenditure.”

Beyond the financial burden, he pointed to structural inefficiencies and water losses that continue to hamper the company’s service delivery.
